Following Frances Newbury’s (Derbyshire Fieldworker) piece about new promoter St Barnabas in Danesmoor, Frances is delighted to welcome several other new promoters this Autumn to our Live & Local network in Derbyshire.
Pinxton Parish Council in Bolsover had their first two shows this season, hosting our showcase event in October – My Big Fat Cowpat Wedding and then last week Fordante From Strauss to the Movies. They sold out at both events with over 100 people at each and had a waiting list too! The community has really embraced the live events and many came dressed in wedding clothes for the first show and in evening dresses for the concert. The ex-coal mining village is looking forward to its third show Spaghetti Swing in January and the whodunnit drama, Backward Glance, in March.
At the other end of the county Hilton Village Hall (just outside Derby, near the border with Staffordshire) will be hosting the Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies‘ Christmas Show, Cauld Feet again Pet, this Friday 6 December and Rag Mama Rag in March. It is a commuter village for Derby and Burton and nearby Toyota and has grown massively in the last few years. The centre was reputedly a stopping place for Mary Queen of Scots on her journey to nearby Tutbury Castle where she was imprisoned.
Chris Nield our promoter in Hilton commented:
“I had heard of Live & Local before as I had seen that there were some good folk acts on in Derbyshire villages so it was great when we heard from you and it chimed in with our thoughts of bringing entertainment to the HVH at weekends. Hilton is a large village that has only become so over the last 20 years with all the new housing developments. So anything more that we can do at HVH to encourage a sense of belonging at the heart of the village is all for the good.
Having lived in the north east for 20 years I know what great folk artists they have there so when it came to choosing a show from Live & Local’s list Jez Lowe was right at the very top of my list. I still can’t believe that he’s coming here to our village. I am delighted the friends and staff at HVH have volunteered to help make this happen.”
The village hall has a most unusual (and much loved and pampered) resident as I discovered recently when I visited; Tally the ginger cat lives permanently in the office. She’s clearly looking forward to Christmas too!
Another new promoter group, Netherseale St Peters Sports Club is the southern most village in Derbyshire, near Swadlincote, and is also getting Christmassy with Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies on 12 December. This will be their second Live & Local show having enjoyed one of Dr Teeth’s concerts last Spring.
Look out also for our other new promoters Shirebrook Town Council, Coal Aston Village Hall Committee, Friends of Eastwood Park (Chesterfield), Belper Music and Arts and Holymoorside & Walton Arts Festival who all have shows in the Spring. More about them soon!
