Live & Local Derbyshire fieldworker, Frances Newbury, tells us how the evening went…..
“‘Good Evening Danesmoor’ announced Radio 2 award winner, Blair Dunlop as he launched onto the stage as if he were doing a gig at Wembley, and got a fantastic response which is not surprising as, living just down the road in Newbold, this is his home crowd.
I’d previously seen Blair perform with his father (Ashley Hutchings, founder member of Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span), and I confess I was a little unsure of whether he’d be able to hold the audience by himself, but I needn’t have worried. Two guitars and one singer led to one spellbound audience and surprisingly lots of blushing teenage girls! Always nice to see young people at a Live & Local event and Blair had certainly attracted more than usual, with lots of them singing along to the more well known songs (well my daughter was anyway!).
This was St Barnabas Community Centre’s inaugural promotion with Live & Local and with the near capacity audience, warm atmosphere, friendly volunteers and modern yet intimate surroundings, it was a huge success. St Barnabas is actually a seven year old church building in an ex mining village close to Clay Cross and Chesterfield, but community groups and audiences wouldn’t necessarily realise that. I have never, for example, sat in a church facing the altar with a climbing wall on one side and a fully licensed bar at the back!”
Steve Smart, Centre Manager and Live & Local promoter was thrilled with the success of the evening;
‘We thought it was a fantastic night. From the professionalism of the sound engineer to the wonderful performance itself to the help we received from Live & Local. Everybody who attended loved it and are asking when Blair will be coming again. A perfect first show.’
St Barnabas Centre are now looking forward to their next show, From Strauss to the Movies by Fordante on Saturday 14th March 2015.
